Course Overview and Benefits




A User's Guide to Claris FileMaker Pro gives people an opportunity to become super users of the solution, even if they aren't necessarily wanting to be developers. This course is specifically geared towards teaching students how to use the Claris FileMaker product for everything up to – but not including – development. It will help a novice user become a power user. There are a great many features one can apply without having to know anything about programming.

By taking the course, you will become familiar with and understand the basic usage of all the platform’s features.  You also will understand the basic technical terminology related to the platform so that you will be able to communicate better with Claris FileMaker developers, even if you don't want to become a developer yourself.

Topics include:

  • Installing Claris FileMaker Pro on your desktop (Mac and Windows)
  • Understanding basic Claris FileMaker terminology
  • Learning how to add, edit, delete, commit and navigate through records
  • Working with the menus and their features
  • Working with attached files and documents
  • Performing finds (basic and advanced) - searching for your data
  • Importing and exporting basic data
  • Saving to a PDF and/or Excel
  • Using Claris FileMaker Go on an iOS device 


This FileMaker training course will uncover new – or little-known – features that are beneficial for people new to Claris Pro as well as users who have worked with the platform for years. It also is a great resource for companies who rely upon Claris solutions to operate their businesses. This course can be used as a tool to train new staff on the basics of their FileMaker solution.

Your Instructor

President/CEO/Founder Productive Computing, Inc. Marc Larochelle

Starting in 1991, Marc worked for the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) for 5 years and built the trade show database in FileMaker which tracked 1000 exhibitors and 12 football fields worth of exhibit space. NAMM is one of the world’s largest trade shows and FileMaker was keeping track of everything. While at NAMM, Marc taught computer classes at night helping users with their Macintosh, MS Word, Excel, etc. In addition, he taught music/multimedia classes at local community colleges. Marc Larochelle and his brother Keith started Productive Computing, Inc. (PCI) in 1996. The company, now in its twenty-seventh year, serves customers who use Claris FileMaker and QuickBooks in the areas of custom development, solutions, plug-ins, hosting, and licensing. Marc is certified in FileMaker versions 7 through 19, and he also holds two certifications in AWS (Amazon Web Services). Marc has been to 19 FileMaker DevCon/Engage conferences (18 as an exhibitor) and is considered a prime instructor and influencer within the Claris FileMaker community.

you showed me ... you don't know what you have done ... this course was really helpful ... this was good for me to see user right click options over fields / text / layout... i forget they're there... plus, i didn't understand find 'and' / 'or' and 'extend / constrain' and saved founds esp in relation to snaplink ... plus more notes for me to review against my own FM file solutions ... language also good = buckets for tables / paper for records ... i love this stuff... mostly... as in... basics are hard to review, though you guys cut to the quick... much appreciated... joel / ps. a number of the search parameters ( … / ! / # ) i didn't know how to use... thank you for showing me... from a basic user's point of view, what is essential...
