Will this course teach me how to install and configure FileMaker Server software?
No. There are other courses that cover that topic specifically. This is about all of the features in the External Authentication tab within the Admin Console of FileMaker Server.
I’ve never used FileMaker Server, will I succeed with this course?
In this course, you will be able to visually see and understand what OAuth and External Authentication is all about which can be helpful to know when taking your FileMaker Certification test or for any communication with clients or colleagues about this process.
Isn’t this topic already covered by FileMaker Inc.?
FileMaker has several textual references you can locate and read through if that is how you learn best. This course is for visual learners who would rather see the processes and connections from start to finish. Following along with the demonstration should take less time than finding and sifting through printed materials for a trial and error approach.
Why is this course a yearly subscription and what is included in my subscription?
Your subscription gives you access to any future updates to course content as well as the ability to go back and review and re-watch the material at any point in the future. Productive Computing University will review significant changes in the processes covered in this course to determine if updates are necessary or beneficial. We welcome student requests or suggestions as consideration for future updates.
I just started with FileMaker, will I succeed with this course?
Absolutely! This course is designed to allow the student to see all of the features of the External Authentication tab as it relates to using a third party OAuth provider (Amazon, Google, or Azure) to access a hosted database. There are no scripts, relationships, or layout building skills necessary.
Do I need to buy subscriptions to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft Azure to do take this course?
No. You will be able to follow along to learn the required steps. If you want to actually perform the steps on your solution, you can get a free developer account with any and all of the three OAuth providers. We will show you where and how to setup these free accounts.
There are no prerequisites if you are simply watching for educational value. If you want to apply the processes to your specific solution, you will need the following:
You have access to a recent model computer that runs Windows or Macintosh operating systems.
You have a licensed copy of FileMaker Server 17 already installed. Previous versions of FileMaker Server work slightly differently and have a different Admin console appearance.
Stuart has been developing software for over 30 years, starting long before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science in 1992. For over 14 years, he was the primary in-house FileMaker developer and the top nationwide instructor for a large education organization. He has been featured in hundreds of live and online courses on many different topics. He now gets to combine his passion for teaching and love of software development into one. “I love breaking down complex projects into simple tangible concepts in fun way. Knowing that the student is going to be able to accomplish so much more in less time after my course brings a lot of fulfillment.” - Stuart Hite, Instructional Design Specialist, Productive Computing, Inc.
Starting in 1991, Marc worked for the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) for 5 years and built the trade show database in FileMaker which tracked 1000 exhibitors and 12 football fields worth of exhibit space. NAMM is one of the world’s largest trade shows and FileMaker was keeping track of everything. While at NAMM, Marc taught computer classes at night helping users with their Macintosh, MS Word, Excel, etc. In addition, he taught music/multimedia classes at local community colleges. Marc Larochelle and his brother Keith started Productive Computing, Inc. (PCI) in 1996. The company now in its twenty-second year, serves customers who use FileMaker and QuickBooks in the areas of custom development, solutions, plug-ins, hosting and licensing. Marc is certified in FileMaker versions 7 through 16 and he also holds a certification in AWS (Amazon Web Services). Marc has been to 19 FileMaker DevCons (18 as an exhibitor) and is considered a prime influencer within the FileMaker community.
